Have You Got Pet Insurance

by Geraldine Dimarco

Despite the many millions of pet owners in the U.S., a huge percentage of them do not have any form of pet insurance; this is peculiar when they are generally loved like any other person in the home. When it comes to looking after our own health needs, we do not forget how important it is; if we really cared out our pet’s health we would not neglect them would we?

This is an often overlooked area and thought to be superfluous by some; pet owners soon learn how costly it is when they require treatment. In the last ten years there have been many areas that have seen price increases and vets are amongst them; the result of this has meant that pet insurance premiums have also risen as well.

So other than rising costs, what are the main reasons you should consider cover for your pets. Unfortunately, domestic animals become sick from time to time or are involved in an accident; when this happens, the cost of treatment may even cause financial strain.

When you find yourself in this predicament, a decision may have to be made; obviously this is something you would prefer to avoid especially if it is based on cost.

A few years back, my vet told me treatment for our dog would cost more than two thousand dollars; what choice did I have, and although I regret it now, I did wonder if we could afford it. Medical science cannot cure everything and pets are vulnerable too; if they do not survive despite the vets best attempts, the bill for treatment has still been incurred and will need to be paid.

The financial strain of keeping your pet healthy can sometimes be quite overwhelming; this is even more relevant if you are experiencing financial difficulties. If you are experiencing money worries then raising additional finances can prove embarrassing at best, and impossible at worst.

Financial difficulties are the number one reason why pets do not receive proper attention; owners with pet insurance do not have these concerns because they have whatever treatment they need. Although pet healthcare insurance costs are rising they are not going to break the bank; plans are still affordable, especially when you consider the alternative.

Various pet insurance options are available, including vpi pet insurance among several others. If you have more than one pet, discounts are often available should you decide to place all your pets on the one policy. All pet owners should think carefully about what type of pet health insurance provision they have made for their pet; do not leave it until it is too late!

What’s The Best Way To Train A Dog? Some “Must-Know “Tips For You

by Sandy Kleiman

Using a dog obedience Training program should be something that all dog owners look into. Not only do you want your dog to behave in a certain way (and be a “good boy”!), but you will also naturally strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

It’s important that you remember that with any dog Training program you want to approach it as though you are a teacher to your dog. You don’t want to be a ruthless enforcer just as much as you don’t want to let your dog think that he or she is in charge! Remember - you are teaching your pooch how to behave and become a well-behaved dog that will make any dog owner jealous.

If you have ever debated between Training your pooch on your own or hiring a professional dog trainer, it’s an easy answer. There’s no better person than you to train your dog and grow the relationship between the two of you.

Effective dog Training requires a battleplan. I included a link at the bottom of this article so you can get a full dog-Training program you can use at home, but for now here are a few tips to keep in mind when starting to work with your pooch.

Before you start any training session, make sure your dog is in the proper mindset. Take him or her for a walk so that your dog can go to the washroom. You also don’t want to try to train them right after they have had a meal. Just like humans dogs can get sleepy after they have filled their belly.

Why do this? So that your dog isn’t distracted during your training. You want him or her to be completely comfortable.

Another tip is to have a little play time before you jump into training. This makes your dog relaxed and more receptive towards you.

You should also have some treats for your dog ready to go. It’s important to reward him so he knows the type of behavior your are looking for. Just make sure you aren’t giving out too many - you don’t want to confuse him!

You may find that your dog runs off at some point in a session. Don’t chase after him. Just use an authoritative voice and call him back. When you have his attention reissue the comand you were working on and keep moving forward.

There are going to be times where it just looks like your pooch is absolutely clueless about what you are expecting of them. This is normal and you can’t let yourself get annoyed or mad at them. Instead, find ways to better communicate with your dog so you get the most out of your future training sessions.

During your training there are going to be some times where you actually have to show him what you want him to do. It might be a tad on the frustrating side, but over time it will get a whole lot easier - I promise!

Training your dog should be the first step you take in forming a strong relationship between you and your pooch. Whether it’s a new dog or one that you have had as a friend for a while now, there’s no better person than you to train your pup and make him the “good” boy or girl you want them to be. All the best!

How Can You Train Your Dog with a DVD?

div style=’italic;’ class=’uawbyline’>by Rosana Hart

How can you train your dog with a DVD? Can you begin Training an adorable little puppy when it’s still quite young and somehow have a well-trained dog after a while? Or if your dog is older, could you teach it to sit, to stay, to come, to lie down, and to walk on a loose leash?

The answer? Possibly.

If you are willing to work a bit, you can do it. Dogs really love to learn new things, and you can get an excellent DVD on how to train your dog. So it’s up to you: if you want to do it, you can. The DVD will show you what to do — and it can also help keep you motivated!

Here is what to do. Think about when the Training will fit into your schedule. The best is if you can do three to five sessions most days, but even two sessions a day — likely before you feed the dog breakfast and dinner — are useful. Several sessions are better than one long one because studies have shown that dogs learn better this way.

So if planning and following through don’t bother you, chances are excellent that you can train your dog by using a DVD.

DVD or Class?

Should you take your dog to a class rather than train him with a DVD? Well, it depends. In this situation, the key factor is whether there is a high quality dog Training instructor in your vicinity. Do be aware that while recent scientific information shows that dogs learn better with positive, pain-free methods, most trainers have not yet crossed over to only using these methods. Beyond that, consider whether the class schedule fits yours.

If a good dog or puppy Training class is available, it can be useful for helping the dog to be at home with many dogs — something you will need to develop in any case — and for learning a lot. Once you and the dog see how much fun it can be to learn new things together, you may want some DVDs to help you continue your dog’s lifelong learning.

What DVD to Use in Training Your Dog?

The best DVD that I have seen on the topic is Train Your Dog: The Positive, Gentle Method, featuring experienced trainers Nicole Wilde and Laura Bourhenne. It’s inexpensive yet has everything you need for a great start for your dog.

Is Dog Training Necessary?

by Francisco Javier Cabrera Rosello

Dog Training is an Art not a science. Many trainers and facilities develop a Training method. Dogs will always be dogs and humans will continually try to make their dog into a furry person. Dog Training is just as important as feeding and watering. That 5lb adorable, cute, huggable, kissable, loveable puppy, could turn into a 60lb nightmare if not shown the proper guidance.

Dog disciplining is an enormously rewarding career. One should remember first of all that, for the most part, educating is a “service” profession and that the trainer is usually working with people who happen to have dogs. Dog Training is more than just telling your dog to avoid doing what she’s doing, it is the action of instructing a dog to exhibit certain desired dog behaviour in specific conditions. Correct dog Training is not a “quick fix” - it is an ongoing, life-long process.

Dog training isn’t necessarily an arduous work but it is a way which needs a big deal of patience as well as the ability to realize which types of training techniques are most effective for the particular dog you are disciplining. There are a number of different techniques which can be used to train a dog.

One of the main needs for dog training is aggression. Aggression related dog behaviour problems include biting, jumping, barking uncontrollably and not obeying instructions. Once a dog maturates from a puppy to an adult, it will become much more difficult to train. Aggression includes any behaviour that is meant to intimidate or harm another animal or person. Some examples of aggresive behaviour are snarling, snapping, barking and growling.

Obedience training would have prevented many of these issues and can aid solve the bad conducts that may exist. Many people consider that obedience training is something that is done to a dog to make it perform some artificial activity on command. Obedience is a part of the cultural setting defined for your dog in your house. Obedience is about you having a relationship with your dog and the dog responding to you. It doesn’t matter if the dog trainer can train your dog; what matters is that the dog responds to your instructions.

The process of training a dog is something we do with our dogs not to our dogs. Both you and your dog will enjoy the reward-based training methods you will learn together. Dog training is definitely not rocket science and is easier than you would expect particularly if you can get help from a good dog training book or guide. Perhaps the most important point with dog training is to keep a level head.

Dog training is supposed to be a fun process, believe it or not.

Dog training is critical to teach a dog what is acceptable and what isn’t. A dog that hasn’t received any directions or limitations can’t know what is to be expected of her. Both you and your dog will love the reward-based training techniques you will learn together.

Obedience is more than just directions - when taught correctly; it gets the common nomenclature between you and your dog. It changes your relationship from one of frustration, to one of harmony.

Have fun with your pet-friend!

You can make your dog more obedient and get rid of their behavior problems just by using the techniques that SitStayFetch teaches in their course, or at least that is what they claim. So I will be conducting a case study to determine if their dog Training tips will work to make my dog obedient to my commands.

For my case study, I am going to take their tips and use them to train my German Shepherd dog, Bear, whom has no Training experience. Bear’s main problem at this time is that he does not come when called. So, I am going to take their tips on how to train your dog to come on command and see if he improves using their tips.

Bear’s favorite thing to do is run along the fence, which happens to be in my garden, playing tag with the dog next door. This of course does not make me happy because he is destroying my beautiful garden. When I see him doing this, I call out to him with a ‘Bear. . .come. . .’ command. Upon hearing me, he stops for a brief moment, glances back at me and then proceeds with his running and playing.

Now frustration sets in, so I start shouting “Bear. . .Come!!!” He will not even acknowledge me now. So I start yelling in frustration and go grab him by the collar and make him come inside, letting him know I am angry at him for not listening to me. I am sure many dog owners have been there and done that. SitStayFetch tells me that I am approaching this all wrong as dogs think differently than humans. They inform me the reason why my dog is not listening to me and tell me by just implementing the why into my Training will make my dog a lot more obedient to my commands.

So what lesson does SitStayFetch teach us, to make our dogs more obedient? They instructs us that when we do discipline our dog for not listening, they are not learning what we want them to do, but rather what we don’t want them to learn. What we see as ‘urg, dumb dog you need to listen to me’, the dog will see it as I get in trouble when I hear the command ‘come’ so, I better not go. When we get angry at our dogs and start yelling at them while trying to train them with a command, this will cause them to think that the command we are teaching them means bad things and they will begin to ignore it. Thus, our dog ignores us, we get mad, and the vicious cycle continues. So, this program tells us that instead of getting angry, we need to teach our dogs that the come command means good things.

If we want our dogs to learn the come command, we need to teach him with positive words and not with negative words or actions. To accomplish this, SitStayFetch teaches us that there are some things we need to do in order to get our dog to listen to us. I will address 3 of the tips here that I feel are the most important, or are the ones that helped my dog Bear the most.

One: Use yummy treats that your dog will love to eat. SitStayFetch suggest to use hot dogs, cheese, or dog treats. I use Cheetos because Bear loves them.

Two: Make sure you speak to your dog with a cheerful voice when you say the command.

Three: Have a long leash handy so you can use it with the command to teach the dog what you want him to do.

So with my new tips in hand I put Bear on my 15 foot leash and let him go outside. The results. . .

At first Bear did not respond because he had been preprogrammed by me that the command ‘come’ was bad. So I initially had to say “Bear. . .Come. . .”, and real him in to me, using the leash, while saying, “Good Boy Bear. . . Good Come. . .” in a very cheery voice, and then giving him a piece of a hot dog. Boy was he excited over that! Then I repeated this by letting him play with his neighbor dog friend and then saying “Bear. . .Come. . .”, reeled him in while giving him praise and a nice treat. It was not long that Bear soon realized when I said “Bear. . .Come” that he was going to get praise and treats and would come running on command. I was so ecstatic and grateful that my dog finally learned to come when I called him.

Does the dog obedience Training tips that SitStayFetch teach really work to train your dog? The results I have seen in just 1 day of implementing the tips to teach Bear the come command are proof to me that yes they do work. SitStayFetch helped me accomplish in 1 day what I had been trying to teach Bear for months. It is so nice to have a dog that actually listens to your commands. Just apply the techniques that SitStayFetch teaches you, and your dog will be obedient in no time at all.

Dog Training in Agility

by Francisco Cabrera-Rosello

As well as for humans, agility Training for dogs makes pets more confident, increases their speed and their physical flexibility while helps excercise their feet. Agility dog Training is a new and a fast growing sport for dogs. This relatively new dog sport is fun for the dogs and for the owners as well.

A small piece of history about Dog Training

Agility Training for dogs started in the late 1970s in England, and its invention was based on horse show jumping. Agility Training for dogs and horse jumping help to make a strong relationship between the owner and the animal. Curiously enough, this kind of events are useful also to develop strategy and teamwork. You win an agility event with your dog if you and your dog complete the course in the fastest time with the fewest number of faults. As you can see, it is very similar again to horse jumping when the horse knocks down one of the poles of the fence.

Positive Benefits for Dogs

Another benefit of agility training for dogs is the mental effect it has on shy dogs and owners. Both often show a renewed confidence after successfully negotiating an agility obstacle course. Many dogs improve their coordination dramatically by completing the basic training exercises used to teach jumping and ramp work.

In the case of hyperactive dogs, agility training helps them to release some of that extra energy in a good and positive manner. Is your dog hyperactive? Here you have a good way of help her. Also, it is known that mental workout has a greater benefit in the dog than the physical one. This kind of sport builds a sense of trust and teamwork between the owner and the animal, and the level of communication between the two of them is very similar to how humans communicate.

A great team in agility training is made when your dog and yourself are in perfect sync, because there is no leash or collar involved when talking about an agility course or contest. To be successful, the dog has to learn a whole new vocabulary, since the order of obstacles vary in each course and the pathway twists and turns.

Young dogs

You can start your puppie training with regular walks in the agility courses as early as when they are 4 months. If they are older, it is recommended conditioning walks of two miles or longer. It is a good advice not to rush your dog to go through the obstacles, as they can injure themselves in the event they fall from an a-frame or a dog walk. Usually, ramps have cross-laths to help with traction when the dog sprints up the ramp.

In the event your dog who is afraid of heights (maybe yours is or maybe you are), the owner will coax through the uncertainty and by doing so will help his dog and himself.

Good Luck in agility training your dog!
